Q. 미국에서 공부중인 유학생입니다.

이틀 전 여권을 분실하였는데 한달뒤에 한국으로 입국 예정입니다. 

재발급 받을시 미국 비자 신청도 같이 해야하나요? 

여권 사본은 있지만, 비자사본은 없는 상태입니다. 

지금 여권을 분실한 상태에서 비행기를 예약해도 되는 건가요? 

A. 안녕하세요, 샌프란시스코총영사관입니다. 

국민신문고를 통해 저희 샌프란시스코총영사관을 방문해 주셔서 감사드립니다. 

귀하께서 문의하신 민원을 잘 접수하였으며 다음과 같이 안내하여드립니다. 

여권 분실신고 및 재발급은 주샌프란시스코공관에서도 가능합니다. 월~금요일 오전 9시~17시까지 오시면 됩니다. 그러나 미국 비자 재발급은 원칙적으로 발급 받은 곳에서 다시 받게 되어 있습니다. 한국에 귀국하셔서 주한미국대사관에 비자 분실신고를 하신 후 재발급 받으시면 됩니다. 

그리고 여권 번호는 여권을 새로 발급 받을 때마다 바뀌지만 항공권 예약은 새 여권 번호가 나오기 전에도 하실 수 있습니다. 바뀐 여권 번호를 추후 항공권을 예약한 여행사 또는 항공사에 알려주시면 됩니다. 

참고로 여권 분실신고 및 재발급 신청은 구 여권 사본을 가지고 영사관으로 오시면 되며, 기간은 3주~4주 정도 소요됩니다. 또한 급하신 경우 DHL 특급배송 비용(24달러)를 추가하시면 일주일 이내에 받아보실 수 있습니다.

Q. I am a student studying in the U.S.A. I lost my passport two days ago and I’m scheduled to go back to Korea one month later. I would like to know whether I have to apply for a US visa at the same time when I have my passport reissued. I have a copy of my passport but no visa. Is it possible to book a flight without a passport now?

A. Thank you for visiting the Consulate General in San Francisco through e-People.

We have heard your complaints and this is our answer.

You can report the passport missing and also have it reissued at the diplomatic office in San Francisco. Its business hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday. However, you can make your US visa reissued only at the place where your visa was originally issued. So, you have to report your visa missing and make it reissued at the United States Embassy in Korea after arriving in Korea.    

Although your passport number will be changed when your passport is reissued, you are able to book a flight without a new passport number. You can later inform the travel agency or airlines of your new passport number. 

Meanwhile, if you want to report the passport missing and apply for reissuance of the passport at the consulate office, please bring a copy of your passport. It will take about 3 months to 4 months to make it reissued. In case of urgent need, you can receive it within a week by paying DHL special delivery cost($24).
