Q. 해외에서 국제운전면허증 발급 방법에 대해 알고 싶습니다.

현재 캐나다 BC주에 워킹홀리데이비자로 거주중입니다. 

한국 운전면허증은 가지고 있으며 국제운전면허증을 발급받고 싶습니다. 

밴쿠버 영사관에서 공증을 받아 신청해야 한다고 나와있는데, 

제가 지금 밴쿠버까지 가기에는 조금 거리가 있어 혹시 다른 방법이 있는지 알려주실 수 있으신가요?

주밴쿠버총영사관입니다. 

귀하의 민원은 잘 접수되었으며, 다음과 같이 답변 드립니다. 

국제면허증은 한국 내 에서만 발급 가능하며, 해외에서는 발급이 불가합니다. 

 그러나 귀하께서는 워킹홀리데이 장기 비자를 발급 받아 캐나다에 입국하셨으므로 국제면허증으로는 캐나다 입국 후 3개월만 운전이 가능하며, 그 이후에는 한국면허증을 캐나다 BC주 면허증으로 교환하셔야 운전이 가능합니다. 면허증 교환을 위해서는 저희 총영사관으로부터 운전면허증 번역 공증을 받으신 후 거주지 ICBC를 방문하셔서 면허증을 교환하셔야 합니다. 

원거리에 거주하셔서 총영사관을 직접 방문키 어려우신 경우 면허증 번역 공증은 우편 신청이 가능하시므로 해당 서류를 구비하셔서 등기우편을 이용, 송부하시기 바랍니다. 

면허증 번역 공증 시 총영사관으로 송부하셔야 할 구비서류를 아래와 같이 안내해 드리니 참고하시기 바랍니다. 

1. 면허증 번역 양식 작성(양식은 영사관 홈페이지 다운로드 후 작성 가능: 홈페이지 (can-vancouver.mofa.go.kr->영사서비스->영사확인->4. 운전면허 번역 확인) 

2. 여권 사진부분 사본 1부, 

3. 캐나다 체류비자 사본 1부. 

4. 한국 운전면허증 앞,뒷면 사본 각 2부. 

5. 수수료 : C$ 4.00 현금 또는 Money Order ** Money Order 발급 받으실 경우, Payable to: Korean Consulate 으로 기재하시기 바람. 

6. PRE-PAID 반송봉투(우체국용 xpresspost 봉투 : 받으실 주소를 영문으로 기재한 후 동봉 요망)

Q. I would like to know how to get an international driver’s license abroad.

I am staying on a working holiday visa in BC State, Canada. I have a driver’s license in Korea and need to get an international driving license. As I know, I need to have my driver’s license notarized by Vancouver Consulate Office before applying for an international driving license. Unfortunately I stay distant from Vancouver so I want to know if there is another way to apply for it. Please let me know if there is some other way.

A. Thank you for your inquiries. This is Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Vancouver. The answers to your questions are as follows;

International driving licenses are only issued in Korea, not in a foreign country.
 However, because you entered Canada on a long-term working holiday visa, you can drive with an international driving license for only 3 months after arriving in Canada, and then you need to change your driver’s license into BC State’s driving license. In order to change it, you should have your driver’s license notarized by our consular office and then visit ICBC near your residence to change it.
 If it is difficult for you to personally visit our consular office, you can apply for the notarization by post. Please send the necessary documents to our consular office by recorded delivery.
 The necessary documents are as follows;

 1. Fill up an application form (available to download on our homepage: Website (can-vancouver.mofa.go.kr->Consular service->Consular confirmation->4. Check translation of driver’s license)
 2. A copy of the photo page of a passport
 3. A copy of Canada residence visa
 4. Two copies of the front and the back of the driver’s license in Korea
 5. Fees: C$ 4.00 in cash or Money Order ** If you use Money Order, please write down Payable to: Korean Consulate.
 6. PRE-PAID reply envelope (xpresspost envelope for the post office: Enclosing your address in English)
